MHACBO Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) Renewal & CEU Requirements

This document outlines the continuing education (CEU) and renewal requirements for all levels of Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC I, II, and III) credentials issued by the Mental Health & Addiction Certification Board of Oregon (MHACBO).

Renewal Time Frame

- CADC certification must be renewed every 2 years.

- Renewal packets should be submitted at least 2 weeks before the expiration date.

- If certification has lapsed, you may reinstate it within 120 days of expiration by submitting a renewal application and paying a reinstatement fee.

- Certifications that have been expired for more than one year require a new application under current standards.

Continuing Education (CEU) Requirements

Each CADC must complete 40 hours of approved continuing education every two years to maintain certification.

Within those 40 hours:
- Minimum 6 hours in Ethics.
- Minimum 2 hours in Suicide Prevention.
- At least 20 hours must be Alcohol & Drug (A&D)-specific education (Category I).
- Up to 20 hours may be general behavioral health/counseling topics (Category II).
- You may use all 40 hours as A&D-specific if desired.
